ITALY / PISA / ARCHITECTURE & CULTURE
Four remarkable monuments, centuries of architectural history, and the enduring beauty of Pisa’s most celebrated square.

Stepping into Piazza dei Miracoli, the Square of Miracles, we were immediately struck by its scale and architectural beauty. Set against an expansive lawn, the Cathedral, Baptistery, Leaning Tower and Camposanto form an extraordinary ensemble. Together, these monuments make the UNESCO-listed square one of Pisa’s most memorable places.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
Our attention first turned to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Its richly detailed Romanesque architecture speaks to the wealth and influence of Pisa during its years as a maritime republic. Inside, the sculpted pulpit by Giovanni Pisano is particularly striking: an intricate work that brings together religious narrative and Gothic craftsmanship.

The Baptistery of San Giovanni
Nearby stands the Baptistery of San Giovanni, a monumental structure combining Romanesque and Gothic elements. Its relatively spare interior contrasts with the ornamentation outside. The acoustics are a particular point of interest: sound resonates through the space with an unusually clear and lingering echo.

The Leaning Tower
The Leaning Tower is undoubtedly the square’s most recognizable landmark. Construction began in 1173, but the unstable ground beneath its foundations caused the structure to tilt. The result is a remarkable piece of medieval engineering, both celebrated for its silhouette and fascinating for the history of its construction and preservation.
Camposanto Monumentale
Our visit also took us to the Camposanto, the monumental cemetery. Within its walls are historic sarcophagi and important frescoes, many of which suffered damage during the Second World War. The restoration of these works offers another perspective on the square: not simply as a collection of famous landmarks, but as a place where centuries of art and history continue to be carefully preserved.
Planning Your Visit
The square brings several major monuments together within easy walking distance. Consider allowing enough time to appreciate the Cathedral, Baptistery and Camposanto rather than focusing solely on the tower. Ticket options, access conditions and opening times can change, so consult the official operator before your visit. Some attractions require timed admission.
